Where to Stay

If you’re planning a visit to Budapest, staying in hotels or apartments around Districts V, VI, and VII (including the vibrant Jewish Quarter) is a fantastic choice. Not only will you find yourself in the heart of the city’s bustling atmosphere, but you’ll also enjoy easy access to major tourist attractions and vibrant nightlife.

Districts VII and XI in Buda are also excellent options for accommodation. The best part is that reaching the city center from these areas is a breeze, with a mere 10-15 minute journey on the efficient public transportation system.

Day 1: Budapest Christmas Markets

Vorosmarty Square Christmas Market

Dates: Nov 17 – Jan 1

Times: Sun to Thur: 10 AM– 9 PM; Fri and Sat: 10 AM – 10 PM
Dec 24: 10 AM– 3 PM; Dec 25 & 26: 12 PM – 6 PM
Dec 31: 11 AM– 5 AM on Jan 1

Let’s kick off Day 1 at the Vörösmarty Square Christmas Market in Budapest, right on Fashion Street. Imagine this: twinkling lights, ice skating, and rows of wooden stalls of handmade goods. The air is filled with the scents of cinnamon pastries, sausages, mulled wine, and other festive treats – a cozy, nostalgic vibe rather than your usual flashy Christmas scene.

With over 160 programs during the Christmas period, there’s something for everyone, from concerts to dance house performances. For the little ones, there’s a cute railway station and weekend puppet shows to keep them entertained.

And as the night falls, make sure not to miss the show at Cafe Gerbeaud. The light paintings there will transport you right into the heart of the Christmas story.

St. Stephen’s Basilica Christmas Market

Dates: Nov 17 – Jan 1

Times: Mon – Thur 11 AM – 9PM; Fri & Sat 11 AM – 11 PM; Sun 11 AM – 10 PM

Dec 24: 11 AM – 3 PM; Dec 25 & 26: 11 AM – 8PM; Dec 31: 11 AM – 3 AM

Jan 1: 11 AM – 6 PM

A few metres away from Vörösmarty Square lies the St. Stephen’s Basilica Christmas Market. It’s a festive village right in front of the basilica, with stalls selling handmade goods and a bunch of tasty eats and drinks, including sugar-free, gluten-free, and vegan options. When the sun goes down, the basilica puts on a light show with 3D animations – clearly visible from all points of the square!

In the middle of it all, there’s a small free ice rink. Children under 14 even get free skate rental and some training on weekends.

Keep an eye out for the lively performances by local folk dance group, the Göncöl Ensemble, and jump in to learn some traditional dance steps if you’re feeling adventurous.

Additionally, don’t miss the Sunday tradition of lighting candles to symbolize Faith, Hope, Love, and Peace.

Day 2: Festive Add-Ons

Although Budapest’s Christmas markets are smaller than those in some European counterparts, there are plenty of additional activities to ensure your visit is worthwhile.

Cinema Mystica Winter Wonderland

Explore this Winter Wonderland for its enchanting lights, captivating performances, and cinematic displays. With themed cabins, light projections, and a charming atmosphere, it’s an ideal destination for a romantic evening or a family outing during the holiday season.

Given its popularity, especially on weekends, be sure to secure your ticket in advance to avoid long waits in the cold queues.

Classical Music Concerts & Ballet

Budapest’s classical music scene thrives all year round. The city’s love for the arts and deep cultural roots make concerts, at iconic venues like the Hungarian State Opera House and St. Stephen’s Basilica, draw crowds of both locals and visitors.

It’s not just about the awesome talent—it’s a musical journey connecting everyone to Hungary’s rich music history. During the holidays, expect to hear some themed tunes to get you in the festive mood.

Alternatively, there’s no more fitting time to enjoy the Nutcracker ballet than during the festive season. This timeless classic captures the magic of Christmas, making it the perfect seasonal delight for all ages.

The Chat

Sim: Given the Budapest Christmas Markets’ small size, do you think they’re still worth a visit?

Kat: Absolutely! They were named the best Christmas Market in Europe in 2023, 2021, and 2019 by Forbes. Size doesn’t equate to quality here. There’s so much to enjoy—the dazzling lights on Fashion Street, ice-skating rinks, diverse food stalls, and the overall charm.

Even the quality of the handmade goods available! I heard rumours that the artisan stall owners have to go through a very comprehensive application and screening process.

Sim: Any extra special Off2Roam tips for our readers?

Kat: Head to the top of St. Stephen’s Basilica, before it gets dark, for the most Instagram-worthy shot of the markets and lights, that’ll make your friends envious.

Sim: I’ve got one too! If you find yourself in Budapest for the Christmas Markets and happen to still be there on New Year’s, make sure to eat some lentils. It’s a Hungarian tradition believed to bring wealth in the coming year.
