1. Explore the Budapest City Park (Városliget)

Established in 1817, the Budapest City Park (Varosliget) is among the world’s earliest public parks, with some of its trees being planted as early as 1751.

These 302 acres are home to numerous iconic attractions, such as Szechenyi Thermal Baths, Grand Circus and Municipal Zoological & Botanical Gardens.

Take a stroll around the park and then relax along the benches in front of the lake and enjoy the views of the nearby Vajdahunyad Castle.

Don’t forget to grab a quick picture at Heroes’ Square located at the end of the park towards Andrássy Avenue.

2. Discover the Hungarian Parliament Building

The Hungarian Parliament, built 1885-1904, symbolizes Budapest’s history, democracy, and cultural pride. Architect Imre Steindl’s neo-Gothic masterpiece, with its Danube-facing location, ornate facade, and historic artefacts, remains a cherished national symbol and a must-visit site.

Tip: Take a night-time river cruise in order to see the illuminated majesty of the Parliament Building.

3. Walk along the Shoes on the Danube Promenade

This moving installation honors the Hungarian Jews shot on the banks of the Danube River during World War II. It features sixty life-sized pairs of iron-sculpted 1940s-style shoes, including tiny children’s shoes.

Pay respects with a candle, flowers, or a moment of silence and sombre reflection.

4. Visit St. Stephen’s Basilica

A trip to any European city is incomplete without a majestic church. St. Stephen’s Basilica, Budapest’s largest church, accommodates up to 8500 people. The Basilica, under construction for over 50 years (1851-1905), stands at 96 feet, sharing the title of Budapest’s tallest structure with the Hungarian Parliament.

Climb to the top of the Basilica for 360-degree views of Budapest.

Tip: Each year on the 20th of August, Budapest celebrates St Stephen’s day. On this day, St Stephen’s mummified hand is taken out of the church where it then leads a procession.

5. Walk across the Szechenyi Chain Bridge

Walk straight down towards the Danube River from the St. Stephen’s Basilica square, and cross the iconic Chain Bridge. Opened in 1849, as the first permanent bridge across the Danube in Hungary, it is a true city symbol – uniting Buda and Pest.

Tip: Visit at night when the bridge is lit up for Instagram-worthy pictures.

6. Marvel through History in the Castle District of Budapest (Castle Hill)

Castle Hill District is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, offering hours of exploration with its many iconic landmarks.

How To Get There:

  1. Take buses 216/16, which take you directly from the city center to the Castle District.
  2. Take the Budapest Castle Hill Funicular at Clark Ádám tér.
  3. Take a taxi or request a ride with the Bolt app.
  4. Walk up the Castle Garden Bazaar stairs from Clark Adam Square or Szell Kalman Square.

Start by exploring Buda Castle and its many viewpoints overseeing the Danube. Stroll onwards to Matthias Church, the second-largest church in the city. The church has a rich history having survived fires, invasions and reconstructions.

Next, wander across to Fisherman’s Bastion, a neo-Gothic and neo-Romanesque marvel offering panoramic views of the city. Built between 1895 and 1902, it consists of seven towers, each symbolizing one of the seven Hungarian tribes that settled in the Carpathian Basin.

Tip: Save on expenses—skip the Fisherman’s Bastion ticket, as most areas are freely accessible.

Before you leave the Castle District, make sure you head into the mysterious world beneath Budapest by exploring the Cave Labyrinth. This unique underground system provides a fascinating peek into Budapest’s geological and historical secrets, while navigating thrilling dark cave tunnels.

Tip: On a hot summer day, the Cave Labyrinth is an excellent way to cool off between your tours above-ground in the Castle District.

9. Explore Budapest’s Famous Ruin Bars

The Budapest Rock Church is located at the foot of Gellért Hill. The construction of the church began in 1926, with its doors opening in 1931.

The church has a rich history dating back to the 19th century, when the cave was inhabited by a poor family, who built a small house of sun dried bricks in the great opening. It is now a popular tourist attraction, with the entrance proudly guarded by a statue of Saint Stephen standing besides his horse.
